I. The First Conference of the International Alliance of Museums of the Silk Road held in Fuzhou

The First Conference of the International Alliance of Museums of the Silk Road was held from November 23 to 26, 2018 in Fuzhou, China. Guan Qiang, Deputy Administrator of the National Cultural Heritage Administration of China, Li Chun, Deputy Mayor of Fuzhou, and Zhu Qi, Deputy Director of Bureau of International Exchange and Cooperation, Ministry of Culture and Tourism of China addressed the Conference.

Members discussed and signed the Framework Agreement on IAMS Exhibition Cooperation, endorsed the IAMS Statutes, and signed the Memorandum on the IAMS First Conference. They also discussed work plan of IAMS for the next five years, determined the date and venue for the next IAMS Conference, and launched the official website.

Apart from the existing 4 Vice President members, 4 new Vice President members were approved: the National Museum of Myanmar, the National Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the National Museum of History of Azerbaijan and the National Museum in Belgrade, Serbia.

Representatives of members delivered speeches on the theme of the Conference, introducing their museum history,  museum collections and major work. The event was joined by more than 30 cultural institutions and museums from over 20 countries, including the National Museum of History of Azerbaijan, the National Museum of Cambodia, the National Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Lao National Museum, the National Museum of Myanmar, the National Museum in Belgrade, Serbia, the National Museum of Mongolia and the National Historical Museum of the Republic of Belarus.

 

II. New Members Added!

Thanks to the industrious IAMS Secretariat, 12 new national museums along the Silk Road joined the Alliance by November 30, raising the total number of membership to 158.

 

III. Official Website of IAMS launched

The IAMS official website was launched during the First Conference. Available in Chinese and English, the site provides latest updates of IAMS at www.musesilkroad.org and www.musesilkroad.com.

 

Upcoming Events

1. IAMS President member the National Museum of China plans to hold the Exhibition of Treasures from National Museums along the Silk Road at the end of March, 2019.

2. IAMS President member the National Museum of China plans to host the Global Museum Directors Forum themed on “The Functions and Missions of National Museums Along the Silk Road” at the end of March, 2019.

3. The Second Conference of the International Alliance of Museums of the Silk Road plans to be held in Beijing, China in 2020.
